I'm going to replace the old plasma screen that is our main TV in the lounge - been looking at the Panasonic range of Viera's and this is my favourite so far TX-L50DT65B
http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/VIERA+Flat+Screen+TV/Smart+VIERA+LED+TV/TX-L50DT65B/Overview/12746435/index.html

Anyone got any views on LED vs Plasma or manufacturers?

Nah, not sure about 3D - seems to be dying a death at the cinema and until they crack the need to wear glasses I think it will always be seen as a bit of a gimmick?

Do you have 3D then ? Surprised

Plasmas do have deeper blacks, generally much better picture quality colour tones wise and nowhere near the screen burn issues people make out.
However, how anal do you want to get about your TV... There is also something to be said about the retina burning qualities some of the newest LED TVs have.

I don't watch enough TV or films to get a real hard on about the minutiae of them like I can for a lot of other hobbies.
I realise this probably doesn't help you much but maybe another viewpoint will help you weigh up your priorities.

TL;DR

Plasmas are generally way cheaper tech now than LCD/LED and are still amazing to look at. You'll get a sheeiteload more TV for your money plus have some $$$ leftover to buy a small beer fridge for the living room next to your reclining chair and fill it full of Kronny Very Happy

My preferred manufacturers for panel quality and general TV quality:

Panasonic
Samsung
Pioneer Kuro (if you can get one, the mutts nuts)
LG are making some decent TVs these days too

If I was replacing my current TV (Samsung series 7 40") it would be with another Samsung at this point.

2 things to note:

1) I do my research for all things gadget
2) I never buy shit

If that's any help to you.

@ Darren

No, I don't have a 3D TV yet, I was just fishing for info/feedback if anyone has got one.  I'm going to change mine soonish and I'm tempted to get 3D.  I'm a sports fan and wondered what footie, cricket and Formula 1 looks like in 3D.

@ Porks

Yep, I've got an older 40 " HD Samsung and I would def. look at a new model from the same stable.

I bought a cheapo 42" from Ebuyer (AON branded - no idea) - good enough for me and at about £350 it doesn't really matter if it only lasts a year or so (been going ok for 2+ years now so bargain!) I got it to replace the similar 32" I'd had which now functions as my monitor

UE46F8000

May well get this one if I can find a decent deal.

Good choice, IMO.  I like the BlueRay comments and I'm a Samsung fan.  I have a library of BlueRay movies that the family like to replay.  My current Samsung HDTV 40" is about 5 years old and still stunning on BlueRay. I  get other movies via a Sky box.

The level of detail these reviewers go to is amazing....do you know anyone who fiddles with the colour temps...?  However, as it's on your home network, you'll get firmware updates if necessary.

I don't like the non-swivel stand but that's just me and the size of my viewing room.  Is it 3D ready?  I couldn't make up my mind from the review.  Seems a bit pricey but the over 40" sets are more expensive.  It's either this or a Sony and I prefer Samsung.

You've earned it, enjoy it!

DMB

Ps @Darren, thread starter, what did you buy?
