Just nuked an XP machine that I was using as a basic web browsing/Internet machine due to EOL of the O/S and installed Ubuntu 13.1 to see where things were these days with all things Linux.
Last time I visited anything Linux flavoured was about 3 years ago. Tried 5 or 6 differents distros and though the experience was OK, it wasn't anything I would have foisted on anyone not even approaching a good level of tech savvy.
Installed Ubuntu 13.1 today and WOW. Things have certainly come on a bit! I would happily install this for my gran or really anyone just wanting an O/S to browse the web, do general office stuff etc.
I've got LibreOffice, Google Docs and all of Google's apps obviously available, Chromium browser, VLC, Steam! (though CS:Go isn't available as a Linux game yet though CS:Source and TF2 and others are ), Gimp for Photo related gubbins, Pidgin doing messaging duties. Everything I need for a basic yet fully functioning setup and all for free!
Could not be happier with it and recommend a look if you need to setup a basic computer for a family member or non tech savvy friend on a budget.
Brilliant!
Gonna try 14.04 on another box now! |

Indeed it's come on a long way since the early days! I still want to go into the terminal though (and cmd window all the time in Windows )
When you think about Android tablets they all run on a Linux base install so no wonder full blown Ubuntu has moved on a long way as well! |

Yes, got to agree. I've tried it on an old WinXP laptop and it makes it....fly...... As you say, it's brilliant.
I'm presently building a file/web server and that will go Ubuntu too. I think you can pay for a version with regular automatic (security) updates so I might go for that.
I must admit, I'm really impressed with it.....just need to check if I need a Smoothwall firewall as well as any AV software.
